The Periodic Table of Elements

Explore periodic trends with this Accessible Audio Periodic Table.

Instructions

Choose the property to display from the combobox, and the Periodic Table will be updated to show that data in place of the atomic mass. Visually an arrow above the table shows the trend for the selected property going from left to right across a period, and an arrow to the left of the table shows the trend for the selected property going from the top to the bottom of a group. The arrows have descriptive text for screen reader users and will be encountered just before the Periodic Table.

You may explore the Periodic Table using the table navigation commands for the screen reader of your choice, or pressing tab will move through the elements from left to right and top to bottom.

When on an element, pressing enter or space will play an organ note corresponding to the value of the displayed property for that element. Pressing ctrl+shift+r will play a series of notes corresponding to the values for each element in the period from left to right, and pressing ctrl+shift+c will play a series of notes corresponding to the values for each element in the group from top to bottom. If there is no known value for an element, a "buzz" sound will be played.

Note: moving to an element with the arrow keys or table navigation commands does not always update the focus for the browser, so to ensure that the commands to play a group or period will work, either press enter on the element or move focus to the element with tab or shift+tab. In addition, the standard Periodic Table showing atomic mass does not have sonification.

Arrow pointing down labeled:
The Periodic Table of Elements. Each entry contains the atomic number, chemical symbol, and atomic mass on elements where data is available. Row 9 is blank, and the content in the last two rows begins in column 3. The column headings announced when navigating the table do not apply to the last three rows.
